John 2

Part 1: Jesus Turns Water to Wine

  • In here, we see a wedding, a feast that in the olden times can continue for many days. Mary, Jesus’ mother then presents him with a statement that they have no more wine
  • You know sometimes when people tell you a statement like that, there’s usually a need for a response
  • One of the reasons was that Jesus and His friends were probably invited to the wedding because they happened to be there and as such, they increased the guest list, for in the past, almost anyone could be invited to a wedding as long as they were present.
  • Therefore when Mary told Jesus that there was no more wine, she probably did it because firstly He indirectly created the problem, and also she believed that He would help resolve the problem
  • When you look at Jesus’ response, don’t you think it sounds a bit rude?
  •  4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
  • But the term used "woman" was so respectful that it might be addressed to the queenliest, and so gentle that it might be spoken to those most tenderly loved. It is used by servants to queens, and Jesus uses it when he, from the cross, commends his mother to the care of John
  • Therefore, the answer He gives is not that of one rejecting His mother, but of one who would show her that, having borne him, would avail nothing, were she not faithful
  • At the same time, think about it, up till now, Jesus has yet to display his “powers” he has not started his ministry YET.
  • So isn’t it strange that Mary is asking this of him?
  • But if you look deeper, you’d realize that maybe Mary is also waiting for that climax to happen.
  • She knows that Jesus is the son of God and she is pushing for the start of his ministry.
  • And he was obedient, he did as his mother asked. It was not that he was forced into doing it; rather he just did it to show his love towards his mother, honoring what she says.
  • In the same way, Jesus listens and provides a response that shows us how to deal with such a situation
  • Later as Jesus begins His ministry, the glory mentioned in v11 refers directly to the goodness and providence of God/Jesus
  • Trust is always honoured

Part 2: Jesus clears the temple

The second part is marks the official start of Jesus’ ministry.

  • And boy did he start with a bang
  • Did you know that it is highly possible that Jesus cleansed the temple twice, once in the beginning of his ministry and the other nearing the closing of his ministry, where the priests and scribes begin to conspire to kill him
  • Now, why did Jesus have to cleanse the temple? I mean like is the market place wrong? Does it mean that we can’t conduct businesses as Christians?
  • No! In fact what Jesus was angry about wasn’t that there were businesses, but more of the way they were being conducted, in the temple courts, the temple which is supposed to be sacred, they de-fouled it
  • When the Master looks at the church and he sees the priests/pastors charging people for their services, like for burial or services/masses he becomes angry. It is not enough to say that they’re doing it for the sake of God, when in reality, their hearts say otherwise. When the house of God becomes a place for shows, festivals, raffles, etc., the Father's House is made a house of merchandise. There is then a need of the whip of small cords to scourge out the traffickers.
  • That’s because if we don’t do that, God will depart from the “temple” and he will abandon it to destruction.
  •  Here, Jesus is not saying that we can’t do businesses, not even that we can’t do it in church, instead, it is in the motives
  • Nowadays there’re many reasons why people come to church, for friends, and even for business purposes, to make contacts
  • But, Master still knows what is in every heart. He has no need to be told what is in mine or yours, but he sees every thought and motive every day. Our lives are naked and open to him with whom we have to do.
  • I think then that it is very significant that Jesus started his ministry with the cleansing of the temple. He was making sure of the motives of the people who were coming to “worship” God.
  • So before we do any “Christian” thing, we should first check our hearts and our motives
  • Jesus’ response in v19 was then amazing
  •  19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."
  • He was asserting His authority
the power and majesty that was "released" revealed to people the person of Jesus
  • It is significant because it highlights that unbelief would do its work in destroying the temple of His body, and its argument would be overthrown by his resurrection from the dead. the temple itself was only a type of the spiritual body of Christ. His body contained within itself the spiritual temple that would be developed. It was appropriate to point to it as the temple, though the Jews did not comprehend his words
  • Here we reach the “revelation” the understanding (at least for us)
  • And Jesus’ answer was quite smart, he did give them the sign that they wanted, although they had to destroy the temple first in order to see it.
  • At the same time, the whole time he was talking about his resurrection, his body being the temple of God.
  • Think, the temple in Jesus’ time was a place of sacrifice, of repentance
  • When Jesus says that his body was the temple of God, he essentially means that his body now becomes the sacrifice and through him, all men are saved.
  • Through him, the water becomes wine, we become refined because of the relationship that we can have with God
  • He becomes the new temple, where only through him, can we come into a relationship with God.

thinking about how the media is subtly influencing the minds of youths this days brings me great concern.

Jude 1:4 says for certain people who have crept in unnoticed who long ago was designed for this condemnation, ungodly people who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ.

sometimes song lyrics can be so simple, nice and ordinary. however, when you watch the MV that comes with them, there are actually very bad connotations to it, like unfaithfulness, fornication, adultery, satanic elements and other sexual innuendoes. some songs focus on the power of "i", in that to achieve things, we need to believe in ourselves. not that it is wrong, it is that as a christian, the focus here is not right. the bible says, apart from Him we can do nothing. we must abide in Him. others, more commonly have messages about fame, wealth, materialism etc etc.  this is are examples of how ungodliness slowly creep into the church, into the lives of christians. Jude is warning the church against such people/ things. you know, the scary thing is that they creep in unnoticed, meaning that such ideas have been filling our minds, influencing our thoughts, judgement, wants and needs, and we don't even realise it. how dangerous is that!!

therefore i want to encourage you, that every single time you watch a movie/ listen to music/ watch television, take time to think about what the message is about. Ask God to give you the wisdom to discern things which are not of Him. we need to guard our hearts, guard our faith, guard the truth.

if you have been watching shows/ listeing to music/ attending events that would not honour God, are you willing to give it up for the sake of Christ and the gospel?

ok i shall not go further, but leave you to read Proverbs 4, which talks about walking in the right ways of God's wisdom :)

Lesson 1
Adultery. Lust, Temptation
- read exodus 20, proverbs 6:24, colossians 3:5
- Matthew 5:28. don't lust for others as it is committing adultery in our hearts.
- Matthew 5:29-30. do not put ourselves in situations that would tempt you. one thing could lead to another.
- 1 cor 6:18. flee from sexual temptation and sexual immorality. our bodies are temples of the holy spirit. we are not our own we must honour God with our bodies.
- 1 cor 10:13. God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear.
* in the same way, because we cannot serve two masters, God has to be the only sovereign one in our lives. we cannot worship God and other things at the same time.
- Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure. for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexual immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have..

Lesson 2
Judgment and Condemnation
- Matthew 7:4 says do not judge
- John 8:6 says let Him who is without sin cast the first stone.
- Let us not judge each other because we are all sinners and God, who is a just God, is the only judge
- 1 John 1:8-10  if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins from all unrighteousness. if we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
- the implication is that if you abide in Christ, if you have Christ in you, there is no condemnation. in Him, He endured the cross and has set us free from sin and death. He was the perfect substitute. what we deserved, He endured it all.

Lesson 3
Forgiveness
Luke 17:3, Matthew 6:14-15
matthew 18:23-25 the parable of the unforgiving servant reminds us that because Christ has forgiven us if our sins, we must also forgive others just like how God taught us to do.
- forgiveness releases us from God's judgment. even though we were dead in our transgressions, God, who is is rich in mercy, made us alive in christ.eph 2:4
- we must choose to forgive. it is relinquishing our rights to get even and to hurt others.
- we must learn to accept forgiveness and learn to forgive.

Lesson 4
Gossip/ Taming the tongue
- read James 1:26 and romans 1:29.
- A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
- we have a choice what we choose to say.
- are we aware of the times we fall into the trap of talking about people behind their backs? i think the danger is that sometimes we don't even realise it, or we do it out of anger/annoyance. we need to make every effort to distant ourselves from conversations that might lead to gossips, and to be consistently mindful of the things that we speak of others.

the pursuit of holiness begins when Christ enters our lives, the process of sanctification, to be made more and more into His likeness in order that his purposes might be accomplished. He chose us in Him before the foundations of the world that we should be holy and without blame in Him. what uncle biow chuan shared is a reminder of how we should live our lives as Christians, and it really does not matter how old you are. sometimes you might think that adultery, lust and temptation are things that happen only when you get older, but no! there are temptations everywhere, we need to be prepared and honour God with our bodies. we need to know what God says about these things so that if the situation really arises, we will not be given in.

Qn: in what ways have we given ourselves reasons to justify our actions knowing full well that God does not permit it?

Lord we pray for clean hands and a pure heart, a heart that solely longs for you. help us to live our lives holy, blameless and above reproach before you. Help us to realise areas in the way we have been living our lives that have not been pleasing to you. forgive us, and by the holy spirit help us to change to be more like you. give us courage and strength to stay away from situation that would cause us to sin. help us to recognise your work in every area of our lives and thank you that your grace is more than sufficient for us. amen.
